March 1, 2018 - SIOG signs agreement with Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ACIO)

The International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ACIO).

The purpose of the CANO/ACIO Oncology and Aging Special Interest Group (OASIG) is to bring together nurses with a common interest in the care of older adults with cancer, engaging in activities to promote innovation in practice, research, education, and policy development. For more information about the OASIG and to join the working group, please visit http://www.cano-acio.ca/?page=oncology_and_aging.

The goal of this MOU is to increase collaboration and mutual recognition as well as to share culturally sensitive approaches to the work of both organizations. The MOU recognizes a mutual intention to work together to develop and promote geriatric oncology nursing as a sub-specialty, to collaborate on the development of programs and/or resources for nurses and to exchange materials developed by both organizations

CANO/ACIO is excited to bring this partnership to our members as it will increase professional development opportunities, resource sharing and knowledge transfer.  CANO/ACIO looks forward to working with SIOG to explore new initiatives to provide excellent cancer care to older patients.

SIOG Nursing & Allied Health Interest Group Chair Cindy Kenis underlines that “The management of older patients with cancer has become a major public health concern because of the aging of the world population and the steady increase in cancer incidence with advanced age. As a result, the care of older patients with cancer constitutes an important part of the daily clinical practice for oncology nurses and other health care professionals. This formal MoU will give us the opportunity to explore new initiatives and challenges, especially for nurses, to provide excellent cancer care to older patients.”
